Introduction

What should students in a business school do to link research with career growth? It is a very important issue. This is so because the majority of students are not able to visualize the significance of integrating research into their academic and professional journey. An attempt has been made in this blog to discuss how integrating research into their academics will help them in building a sustainable career.

2.0 What Should Students in a Business School Do to Link Research with Career Growth?

The author has developed seven strategies which must be adopted by students of B-schools to link research with career growth.

2.1 Focus on Industry-Specific Problems and Trends

Choosing Relevant Research Topics
Students from Business Schools should focus on conducting research that addresses real-world industry problems and trends. Selecting research topics that are closely aligned with the current challenges in the industry may be a good proposition. These challenges may pertain to finance, technology, or human resources.

Develop Industry Expertise
In-depth research into industry-specific trends such as digital transformation, sustainability, or consumer behavior equips students with new knowledge. This new knowledge enables them to understand market dynamics, increasing their employability potential.

For example, a student researching the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on supply chain management could make use of AI in many ways. These are excellent opportunities for logistics and operations.

2.2 Develop Analytical and Critical Thinking Skills

Develop Mastery Over Data Analysis Tools
Research often involves data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Mastery over data analysis tools may equip students with new data-driven insights. Some tools may include:

  • Generative AI
  • Analytics tools
  • Advanced Excel and Jamovi
  • Data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, Python, R, etc.

2.3 Engage with Industry Experts and Practitioners

Collaborate on Research Projects with Industry Leaders
Collaborating on research projects with industry leaders, specialists, and professors may offer a unique opportunity to gain real-world insights.

Network for Career Opportunities
Building relationships with industry leaders, specialists, and professors may prove to be a valuable prospect for career growth.

2.4 Publish and Present Research Papers for Credibility

Publish in Reputed Journals/Industry Reports
Students may build credibility and visibility in their chosen field if they publish their research findings in journals or industry reports. A student publishing such papers/reports may be identified easily by industry experts.

Present at Conferences and Seminars
This gives an opportunity for students to showcase their work, gain feedback, and establish themselves as experts.

Example: A student who publishes research on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and presents at a conference may be seen as a specialist in that field. Through this, they may be offered a job.

2.5 Seek Internships and Practical Applications of Research

Apply Research Skills During Internships
Internships provide a unique opportunity for students to grow core research skills. If practical problems at the place of internship are solved by applying research, it may prove to be highly valuable.

Turn Research into Actionable Insights
Internships allow students to translate their research findings into actionable solutions. These benefit the organization.

Example: A student interning at a marketing agency might use research on consumer behavior to help the agency. The agency’s campaign, as part of this research, can become more comprehensive. Thus, the competence of the intern is reinforced.

2.6 Leverage Research to Drive Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Identify Business Opportunities Through Research
Research may be a good tool for students who want to start their ventures as entrepreneurs. The study of market trends, customer needs, and the competitive landscape may help students in identifying new business opportunities.

Build a Research-Driven Business Model
Research may form the foundation of a business model by providing insights into target markets.

Example: A student researching the e-commerce landscape in rural India might discover an untapped market for specific consumer goods. He may start an online retail business.

2.7 Connect Research with Emerging Technologies and Digital Transformation

Stay Updated with Technology Trends
New technologies like digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, IoT, big data, and data analytics are the order of the day. Employers are looking for candidates who understand how to leverage these latest technologies for business growth.

Adopt Research for Technological Innovations
Adapting research to technological innovations in industries such as finance, healthcare, and manufacturing is a dire necessity today. A student doing this may help in better problem-solving, reducing costs, and streamlining processes and products.

3.0 Conclusions

On the basis of the above-mentioned discussions, the following conclusions may be drawn:

  • Research is not just an academic requirement for students from B-schools, but it is also a valuable tool for them.
  • Research helps students develop analytical and critical thinking skills while building expertise. This, in turn, leads to better career opportunities.
  • Focusing on industry-related topics, collaborating with professors, and applying research to real-world problems are effective ways to enhance career growth.

The strategies suggested in this blog may help develop students into thought leaders and innovators.
